Piasentina stone is the name that difines this type of sedimentary calcareous rock having a secondary origin substantially due to its compaction and re-cementing of pre-existent calcareous material.

Piasentina stone may be petrographically classified as a calcarenite / bio-sparite thus tending towards a finer granulometry that is included in biomerites.

Pietra Piasentina belongs to the carbonate megablocks that make up the powerful sequence of the flysch of Givo(Early Palaeocene - Lower Eocene), originated by gravitational processes in marginals platform and sloped areas, iniated by tectonic movements.
